Bat Yam was established in 1926 and since then grew dramatically due to mass immigration and gained city status in 1958.
The city covers eight square kilometers in the heart of Gush Dan, and has approximately 160 thousand people in 50 thousand households. The population of the city is a social mosaic - a rich cultural, consisting of veterans and immigrants from a variety of secular and religious communities from various backgrounds.
The city is also known for its major football club, Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam, currently plays in Liga Leumit, the third level of Israeli football and to the Al Gal beach which is regarded to be one of the best surfing spots in the region, having fairly consistent surf conditions, especially during the summer months.
